#Microplastics were put firmly on the Agenda last week at #wef23 in Davos, and will now be a top priority at the #UN #Plastics #Treaty negotiations in Paris in May.
Three important figures in the Ocean world went on the record over the last week about the vital need for #Microplastics to be a top priority in the next round of negotiations of the UN Plastics Treaty, which are due to take place in Paris in May, 2023. Firstly, Ambassador Peter Thomson, #UnitedNations Secretary General's Special Envoy for the Ocean, and Co-Chair of Friends of Ocean Action, during a panel discussion at #wef23, spoke about the Treaty negotiations, and said that "...the process is proceeding very strongly, and I have a lot of hope that particularly Microplastics will get the attention that it needs...". In a later Global Plastic Action Partnership session, the new Director General of WWF, Kirsten Schuijt, said "Microplastics is probably the one we should be prioritising...from a human health perspective... Its the Microplastics that get into the bloodstream, and recent research is showing that it even ends up most likely into the brain....It also gets into the marine mammals and the oceans with all the devastating effects...." Finally, Nina Jensen, CEO of REV Ocean and one of the Friends of Ocean Action, made a great Post on this important topic. We continue to develop and enhance our industry leading, clean surface treatment technology, to improve its industrial and #sustainability features.
Over this winter, we have a project to add sensors (#IoT) to our equipment. This will enable us collect operational and sustainability #data, enhancing reliability and performance, and providing data to customers for their sustainability reporting. These machines are now on their way to Scotland for use by Babcock International Group for the Royal Navy, and to Dubai where they will be operated by Drydocks World - Dubai, a subsidiary of DP World. These industry leading customers chose Pinovo's technology because of its industrial benefits, and also because it delivers a quantifiable sustainability impact with 1. No #PaintMicroplastic, Grit and Dust Leakage - SDG's 12, 14 2. Over 60% less CO2 Emissions compared to open grit blasting - SDG’s 9, 12 3. Much improved working conditions for Operators - SDG 8 Clean Blasting is being adopted by leading sustainable operators in the #defence industry, and in #docks and #ports. Should your Industrial or Marine operation not be doing the same? And remember, #PaintIsPlastic! #SaveOurOcean #SDG14 Pinovo welcomes the timely and important report by the team of scientists at Norsk institutt for vannforskning (NIVA), lead by Idun Rognerud, on #microplastics in a Global Agreement on #PlasticPollution. Pinovo was delighted to be asked to join the panel discussion to launch the report.
We agree 💯% with the NIVA recommendation that the proposed UN Plastics Treaty should specifically address #microplastics as a distinct category of plastic pollution, warranting specific control measures. This includes, of course, #PaintMicroplastics - the biggest source of #Ocean Microplastic Leakage. In addition to the continuing negotiations of a UN Plastics Treaty at INC-2 in Paris in May, the next six months are going to be very busy on the #microplastics front, with expected publication of - the #eucommission report on #Microplastic #Emissions, and regulatory measures to achieve the #EUGreenDeal objective of reducing them by 30% by 2030, and - an up-date of the Pew Charitable Trusts 2020 "Breaking the Plastic Wave" report. This is all good news for Pinovo in our mission to put the issue of Paint Microplastic Pollution, and our clean circular solution to the problem, "on the agenda"! And don't forget, #PaintIsPlastic! There is a better, cleaner way to do surface treatment on Wind Turbines than the method you see in the photo below👇 - which is awful, both in terms of operator safety, and dumping Paint Microplastics into the Ocean!
We are super happy that Pinovo has just been awarded a grant by Handelens Miljøfond (the Norwegian Retailer’s Environment Fund) to develop a Clean Surface Treatment Solution for the Offshore Wind Industry. Using Pinovo’s patented, proven front-end clean vacuum blasting tools, we will be working with a wind energy industry partner to develop a new, more mobile back-end solution for use on Offshore Wind Turbines. This will stop Ocean Paint Microplastic Pollution at source, enabling the wind energy industry deliver clean energy, without polluting the Ocean during surface treatment, and with safer working conditions for operators. Pinovo is already providing similar solutions across a range of other industries. So, after a very busy 2022, this news sets Pinovo up nicely for an even busier 2023! Many thanks to Handelens Miljøfond, and for all the great work you are doing to support important environmental projects in Norway, and around the world! |
